CIRCULAR ART – CARBON NEGATIVE FOOTPRINT
Adult Trees absorb an average of 170 kg of CO2 per year. Some Tree species, like adult Stone Pines can even reach 25 tons of C02 absorption per year, due to the fact that they are evergreen trees. Evergreen trees of the same size usually have more absorption capacity than trees of feeble leaves.
Usually when companies advertise the planting of trees, if they do so, most of the planting is of baby trees and very small trees, which hardly have carbon capture capacity, due to their tiny size, baby trees and small trees, usually have a very low survival rate, which means they need more care in order to survive, this care and surveillance imply more maintenance costs, and many times the advertised trees are not really planted, and if they are planted a big percentage will die in the next years, and their carbon absorption capacity will be very low, due to the slow growth of most tree species.
The Bionic Festival uses human size trees and human size plants, that are not baby trees, they are also not adult trees, with high intake of CO2 from the atmosphere, but nevertheless the Trees and Plants participating in the Bionic Festival have medium-high intake of CO2 compared with most of the tree planting programes we hear about.
Creating a circular art model of medium size plants and trees with medium-high CO2 capture, that are donated to urban gardens and neighbouring communities, makes the Bionic Festival a carbon negative performing arts event, and opens the gate for real and honest sustainable art, that gives more oxygen to society while helping dancers and artists from all over the world.
In the last five years we have donated 38 adult trees to Madrid and Lisboa, generating a negative footprint and creating the first carbon neutral festival in the world. Check our Bionic Maps and the Trees we have donated.
